Bishop Maintenance Trust
Fund Set for DABG |
| |
The Eustace Bishop, Sr. family
has established, in honor of his wife, The Mary Newton Bishop DABG
Maintenance Trust Fun through The Community Foundation of Southeast Alabama.
The Fund is established to assure the future operation and maintenance of
the Gardens. The initial goal of the Trust Fund is $100,000.
Only after it reaches that plateau can interest derived from the $100,000
plus gifts above that amount be utilized if needed.
Contributions to the Fund by the Bishop Family and friends now totals
$54,000. The Bishop family wanted to honor Mary Newton Bishop (Mrs.
Eustace Bishop) by establishing this Trust Fund and at the same time
providing an avenue to assist in the future maintenance of the DABG.
Mr. Bishop explained, "Mary Alice has always loved flowers and in years
past worked diligently in her garden to the delight of her family and
neighbors."
Donations to the fun, which are tax deductible, can be made as follows:

Wedding
Garden-Christie Jordan Altar
|
| |
Ground
has been broken at
the DABG to begin construction of a Wedding Garden. The initial master
plan for the Gardens did not include an area designated for a Wedding Garden
but couples have been marrying at various locations
since development of the Gardens was begun. The Rose Garden and Gazebo
have been the favorite spots.
A concept of a Wedding Garden was begun in the year 2000. Christie
Jordan, a beautiful young lady, a graduate of Northview High School, and
only 26 years of age passed away unexpectedly. Christie has been
dating David Woodham for a number of years and they were planning to be
married.
Christie was the daughter of Hilton and Paula Jordan, who reside in
Birmingham, and David is the son of Dr. and Mrs. Bruce Woodham of Dothan.
Mrs. Bruce (Mary Jo) Woodham presented an idea to Paula Kelley, then DABG
Director, that a wedding altar be built at DABG in memory of Christie.
The DABG Board of Directors approved the idea and donations for the project
were received.
Trips were made to Jasmine Hills Garden in Montgomery to visit their Wedding
Garden to glean ideas for the altar. Several altar plans were
received and locations were discussed. Slowly the idea of just
building an altar turned into "Let's build a Wedding Garden".
Mark Pepe, a local architect, and Northstar Engineering Services volunteered
to design the Wedding Garden with the focal point being the Christie
Jordan Wedding Altar. The Wedding Garden is being constructed between the Rose
and Camellia Gardens. The Christie Jordan Wedding Altar is
nearing completion and will be large enough to accommodate the wedding
party.
The guest seating capacity will
total 600.
The first phase of development included grading, building a retaining wall, the Altar, and grassing the seating area. Future
plans also include encapsulating the Wedding Garden with landscaping plants
to assure the feeling of being in an outdoor room. Future plans
include construction of two buildings--one for the bride and
bridesmaids and one for groom and groomsmen. Both facilities will be
heated and cooled with dressing areas and rest rooms.
Other items in the Garden include: side walkways and a center aisle, a
fountain, and
a staging area for reception/entertainment. Progess is being made
daily and it is hoped that this Garden will be completed by the end of the
summer.
Though Christie's life was cut short and she didn't have the opportunity to
experience the joy and excitement of standing on an altar to be married,
hundreds of brides will have the opportunity to say their wedding vows on
the Christie Jordan Wedding Altar. "All things work together for
good." Romans 8:28.
Those wishing to contribute to this ongoing project can do so by sending
their donations to:
