{"id":6114,"date":"2023-05-10T13:14:21","date_gmt":"2023-05-10T13:14:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.dabg.com\/?page_id=6114"},"modified":"2023-05-10T13:28:23","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T13:28:23","slug":"the-spark","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.dabg.com\/index.php\/about-us-2\/the-spark\/","title":{"rendered":"The Spark"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"has-text-align-center has-black-color has-text-color has-x-large-font-size wp-block-heading\">The Beginning<\/h1>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image is-style-rounded\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.dabg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9960-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6115\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.dabg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9960-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.dabg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9960-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.dabg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9960-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.dabg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9960-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.dabg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/IMG_9960-2048x1536.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\">The spark that would result in the creation of the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens occurred during the second annual Master Gardener Program in 1989.\u00a0 The Master Gardener Program had been established in Houston County the prior year by County Extension Agent Reafield Vester.\u00a0 In the course of that program, the question was raised by Mrs. Betty Welden, a student, \u201cWhy don\u2019t we have a botanical garden here?\u201d.\u00a0 Mr. Vester\u2019s response was \u201cNobody has ever tried.\u201d\u00a0 She replied, \u201cWhy don\u2019t you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\">From that question, the Gardens would spring forth.&nbsp; In one of his many newspaper articles for the Dothan Eagle, Mr. Vester asked for volunteers to help study the feasibility of forming a local botanical garden.&nbsp; A study group was formed, they agreed to proceed, and shortly thereafter began the search for a potential location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\">In 1994, the 48 acre property was purchased from the Whiddon family.&nbsp; At the time of purchase, this land was being farmed and was planted in soybeans<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\">Volunteers enthusiastically begin developing the property, the first garden being the Rose Garden.&nbsp; Many more would follow.&nbsp; The Gardens enjoyed today by thousands of annual visitors is the result of hard work, sweat, and the support and dedication of hundreds of volunteers and local businesses over many years.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-white-background-color has-text-color has-background has-medium-font-size\">We honor Reafield Vester for his vision and untiring work that led to this, the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens.
